Major John J. Buss Combat Instructor Battalion Executive Officer

Major Buss graduated from North Greenville College in 2005 before reporting to Recruit Training at MCRD Parris Island.  Upon completion of initial MOS training, he was assigned to Bridge Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion in Camp Lejeune, NC where he served as an Engineer Equipment Operator.

 

In the fall of 2006, Major Buss was assigned to Engineer Company, Combat Logistics Battalion-2.  In February 2007, the Battalion deployed to Al Asad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as a squad leader. While deployed, he was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program.

 

Upon his redeployment, Major Buss reported to Officer Candidate School and, upon completion, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After completing The Basic School’s Basic Officer Course, he proceeded to Pensacola, FL for training as a Naval Aviator at VT-28 and HT-18.  Major Buss completed flight training in August 2010 and was designated a Naval Aviator. 

 

After initial flight training Major Buss was assigned to HMLAT-303 for follow-on training and designation as an AH-1W pilot.  Major Buss then reported to HMLA-469 “Vengeance”, Marine Aircraft Group-39, Camp Pendleton, California.  In May 2012, the squadron deployed to Camp Bastion, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as an AH-1W pilot and Scheduling Officer.  From May to November 2014, Major Buss served in an HMLA detachment which reinforced HMH-361 in support of the Unit Deployment Program.  During this time he served as the Logistics Officer for the squadron.  Upon his return, the detachment reinforced the Fleet Replacement Squadron, HMLAT-303, until his departure in May of 2015.

 

In May 2015, Major Buss was assigned to Helicopter Training Squadron-8, Training Air Wing-5, Marine Aviation Training Support Group-21 in Pensacola, FL.  During this tour he served as an Instructor Pilot, Flight Leader, and Scheduling Officer before being assigned as the Squadron’s Assistant Senior Marine. In 2017 he was named the squadron’s Flight Instructor of the Year.

 

Major Buss reported to The Basic School in July 2018 for service as the Assistant Operations Officer.  In July 2019, Major Buss assumed command of Fox Company, Basic Officer Course 6-19 until their graduation in March 2020.  In April 2020 he assumed his current duty as the Executive Officer for Combat Instructor Battalion.

 

His personal decorations include the Air Medal with strike/flight numeral 5, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
