Assault Amphibian Unit Leader (AAUL) provides the student the necessary skills to capably manage an AAV Section tactically and administratively. Building upon skills introduced during Assault Amphibian Crewmember and Assault Amphibian Vehicle Commander Courses, students will gain a firm understanding of how to design and incorporate a unit training program, and how to conduct and inspect preventive maintenance programs. Students will be able to independently employ an AAV Section both offensively and defensively, to include directing section fires, while providing advisement to their supported unit commanders. Students will also obtain the necessary skills to provide planning guidance and wave control during AAV ship-to-shore operations. On successful completion, graduates will be capable of maintaining, managing, and employing an AAV Section in garrison and combat environments. The purpose of this course is to provide the training necessary to serve as a section leader in an Assault Amphibian unit.

Assault Amphibian Unit Leader (AAUL) will perform various duties incident to the operation and maintenance of Amphibious Assault Vehicles and Assault Amphibian Section. AAUL prepares the Marines for the tactical employment of troops and equipment during ship to shore movement and subsequent operations ashore. This course introduces the unit leader to the responsibilities for all vehicles and associated collateral equipment in an Assault Amphibian Section. The unit leader will be trained to employ AA unit gunnery skills, in water-borne operations, and in tactical movements of an Assault Amphibian Section. The course will train the students to serve as advisors to supporting units on training, welfare, administrative functions and tactical employment of their respective units. Time on the ramp, in the water and in the field exercises are used to reinforce the classroom instruction.

Assault Amphibian Unit Leader (AAUL) Course is designed to develop the enlisted AA unit leader skills beyond the AAV Vehicle Commander. Instructional areas shall focus specifically on: Maintenance Administration, Unit Training Management, Orders Writing, Amphibious Operations, Offensive Operations, and Defensive Operations. Students attending this course should have been previously assigned as a Vehicle Commander and be proficient in gunnery skills, land navigation, and have already had some introduction to doctrinal terms and graphics. Students must demonstrate mastery of all instructional areas via written and performance examinations, and display sound leadership throughout the course to meet graduation requirements.
