Colonel Coby M. Moran

Colonel Coby Moran is originally from Seattle, Washington and was commissioned in 1995 through the NROTC program at the University of Michigan. Colonel Moran was given orders to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  While serving with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, Colonel Moran held positions as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Weapons Platoon Commander, and 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander and deployed to Okinawa, Japan under the Unit Deployment Program (UDP).

Colonel Moran then served as an Infantry Programs Action Officer at Marine Corps Systems Command from 1998-2001 in Quantico, Virginia. Colonel Moran was transferred to 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment in Camp Pendleton, California.  Colonel Moran deployed twice to Iraq with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines.  During these deployments, he participated in the “March Up” to Baghdad in 2003 and the Battle of Najaf in 2004 as a Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer.

In 2005, Colonel Moran was transferred to The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia where he spent three years instructing newly commissioned Second Lieutenants prior to their assignment to MOS schools.  Colonel Moran then studied for two years at Marine Corps University in the Command and Staff and School of Advanced Warfighting (SAW) Programs.

Colonel Moran served in Okinawa as the Plans Officer and future Operations Officer at 3d Marine Logistics Group from 2010-2012 where he participated in Operation Tomadachi tsunami-relief efforts and Exercise Cobra Gold 2012.  Colonel Moran was then selected to command 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment and transferred back to Camp Pendleton, California.

Colonel Moran assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines in 2013 and deployed with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2014.  During this deployment, Battalion Landing Team 2/1 participated in multiple bi-lateral training exercises across the Pacific and Middle East and supported Operation Inherent Resolve in the Central Command AOR.  Colonel Moran was then selected to attend Naval War College in 2015 where he graduated with distinction.  He was assigned as an Operational Planner at USAFRICOM in 2016 where he served as the Campaign Plans Branch Chief.

Colonel Moran was transferred to the Council of Review Boards at the Washington Navy Yard in 2018 and then served as the Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs before assuming command of School of Infantry (West) in July 2020.

Colonel Moran holds Master’s Degrees from Capitol College, Marine Corps University, and the Naval War College.  His awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with combat “V”, multiple Meritorious Service Medals, the Navy/Marine Corps and Army Commendation Medals, Naval Achievement Medal with combat “V”, and the Combat Action Ribbon.  He is married to Cecilia Manning Moran and is the father of Aiden (13) and Nora (10).
