Sergeant Major James M. Britton enlisted in the Marine Corps and attended recruit training at MCRD Parris Island in May 1999. In August 1999, PFC Britton transferred to Camp Geiger, North Carolina for infantry training at the School of Infantry. Upon graduation with the MOS 0311 in October 1999, he was assigned to Marine Barracks Washington, DC. PFC Britton was assigned to Bravo Company for duty as a ceremonial marcher. In November 2000, LCpl Britton was assigned to Alpha Company and attended Silent Drill School. Upon graduation, he served with the Silent Drill Platoon for the next three years and held several different billets within the platoon from squad leader to drill master.
In December 2003, Sgt Britton was transferred to Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines. During this time, he held the billets of squad leader and section leader for the Combined Anti-Armor Team platoon. While with the battalion, he deployed in 2004 to Port Au Prince, Haiti in support of Operation Secure Tomorrow and in 2005 to Fallujah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
After attending Recruiters School in San Diego, California he was transferred to Recruiting Station Columbia, Recruiting Substation Spartanburg, South Carolina in May 2006 for duty as a canvassing recruiter. While on recruiting duty he was selected for promotion to Staff Sergeant and was recognized as the RS Columbia Recruiter of the Year for FY 2007. He then served in the billet of SNCOIC and was later recognized as the RS Columbia small station SNCOIC of the Year for FY 2008. He was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in January 2009.
Upon completion of recruiting duty, GySgt Britton was transferred to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines. During this time, he served as a platoon commander and platoon sergeant for the Combined Anti-Armor Team platoon and was later the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Echo Company. While with the battalion, GySgt Britton deployed in 2010 to Marjah, Afghanistan and again in 2011 to Trek Nawa, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was frocked to the rank of First Sergeant in August 2012 and transferred to serve as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant for Detachment Two, Supply Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 453 in Albany, Georgia.
In June 2015, 1stSgt Britton reported to 2d Combat Engineer Battalion and was assigned to Mobility Assault Company and later served as the Headquarters & Service Company First Sergeant. He was frocked to his current rank in March 2017 and transferred to Marine Attack Squadron 231 to serve as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
In February 2019, SgtMaj Britton reported to the School of Infantry-East where he currently serves as the Battalion Sergeant Major for Advanced Infantry Training Battalion.
SgtMaj Britton’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6th award), the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6th award), and the Combat Action Ribbon (3rd award).
