Biography
Commanding Officer, School of Infantry-West
Colonel Patrick B. Byrne

Colonel Patrick Byrne, a native of Cypress, Texas, enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1994.  Upon completing entry-level training, he reported to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines for duty as an Automatic Rifleman.  He served as a Fire Team Leader during the battalion’s 31st MEU (SOC) deployment in 1995 and was selected for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program in 1996.  He was commissioned upon graduating from Texas A&M University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Systems Management.  

In January 2000, Second Lieutenant Byrne reported to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, where he served as Rifle Platoon Commander and Rifle Company Executive Officer.  While deployed with the 11th MEU (SOC) in 2001, he participated in humanitarian assistance operations in East Timor and served as Officer-in-Charge of a security detachment that reinforced Interim Marine Corps Security Force Company, Bahrain. 

In June 2002, First Lieutenant Byrne reported to Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific where he served as Assistant Officer-in-Charge and Officer-in-Charge of the Amphibious Raid Branch.  Following this assignment, he attended Expeditionary Warfare School.  

In August 2006, Captain Byrne reported to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines.  He served as a Rifle Company Commander during the battalion’s 13th MEU deployment in 2007, participating in combat operations when the MEU transitioned ashore into Iraq.  He served as Weapons Company Commander during the battalion’s 31st MEU deployment in 2008, assuming duty as the battalion’s Operations Officer at the end of the deployment. 

In June 2009, Major Byrne assumed command of Recruiting Station Montgomery, Alabama.  Upon relinquishing command in June 2012, he attended Air Force Command and Staff College.  

In June 2013, Major Byrne reported to the 15th MEU where he served as Assistant Operations Officer for the MEU’s Deployment 15-1, Operations Officer for the MEU’s Deployment 17-2, and Executive Officer following the MEU’s return from Deployment 17-2.  

In August 2018, Lieutenant Colonel Byrne reported to the 1st Marine Regiment for duty as the Regimental Executive Officer.  

In January 2109, Lieutenant Colonel Byrne assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, deploying with Battalion Landing Team 2/4 for the 31st MEU’s 20.2 deployment.  Upon relinquishing command in February 2021, he reported to I MEF where he served as the G-35 Expeditionary Operations Cell Lead, G-35 Future Operations Officer, and Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff G-3. 

Colonel Byrne assumed command of School of Infantry–West in March 2024.  

Colonel Byrne is a graduate of Expeditionary Warfare School, Weapons Tactics Instructor Course, and Operations Tactics Instructor Course, and earned a Master of Military Arts & Science from Air Force Command and Staff College.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing device and gold star in lieu of second award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award.
