Commander Gire graduated from the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in Criminology in 1998 and a master’s degree in Public Health in 2005. He enlisted in the Naval Reserves in 2003 as a Religious Program Specialist. Following completion of basic training, he served with a Submarine Squadron in Kings Bay, Georgia and an Assault Amphibian Battalion in Tampa, Florida. In December 2005, he was commissioned as a Healthcare Administrator in the Medical Service Corps by way of the Direct Commission Officers program.
Commander Gire’s first assignment as a naval officer was to the Naval Hospital, Pensacola, Florida in February 2006 as the Plans, Operations, and Medical Intelligence Officer and Assistant Head, Manpower Management Department. While assigned to NH Pensacola, he deployed with Embedded Training Team-Lima as the Combat Health Support Officer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In June 2008, he was assigned to 3d Medical Battalion, 3d Marine Logistics Group in Okinawa, Japan where he held the initial positions of Company Commander and the S-3A/Assistant Operations Officer. In April 2009, he was chosen to serve as the Commander, Health Services Detachment, Combat Logistics Group 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. At the completion of this one year deployment, he was selected as the S-3/Operations Officer, 3d Medical Battalion. During his tour at 3d Medical Battalion he responded as the Medical Planner to numerous humanitarian crises, to include disasters in the Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan.
Commander Gire transferred to III Marine Expeditionary Force in July 2011 where he served as the Medical Planner responsible for Southeast Asia exercises, the build up of the Marine Rotational Force in Australia, Theater Security Cooperation Cooperative Health Engagements, and Korea exercises, plans, and operations. He also served as an LNO to the III MEF G-4 and as the Force Surgeon Administrative Officer.
During academic years 2014-2015, Commander Gire attended the Naval War College, Newport, RI, where he earned a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. He also earned an additional qualifying designator in African Studies. Upon completion of this period of educational studies, he was assigned to the 6th Fleet Force Surgeon’s office.
As the Lead Medical Planner for U.S. Naval Forces Europe/Africa and Sixth Fleet, CDR Gire was responsible for the medical plans for more than 20 exercises, ongoing operations in Africa, and all major war plans.
CDR Gire served as the Executive Officer at Field Medical Training Battalion-West from July 2018 until March 2020 and has been assigned as the Commanding Officer March 2020. He leads a staff of 44 in the training and education of hospital corpsmen and medical service officers in preparation for service with the Fleet Marine Force.
Commander Gire has earned two Master of Arts degrees, one in Public Health from University of South Florida and one in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He also has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Criminology from University of South Florida. His personal decorations include: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Army Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
