Biography
Commanding Officer, Financial Management School
Lieutenant Colonel Joseph M. Mauro

        Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Mauro was born in Elyria, Ohio.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps in November of 2002 out of Deland, Florida and graduated recruit training in February of 2003.  Upon completing Marine Combat Training and Enlisted Supply Basic Course, PFC Mauro reported to H&HS Squadron MCAS New River as a supply administration clerk.  During his tour, PFC Mauro enrolled in off-duty education where he earned his Associate of Art Degree from Campbell University.  Shortly after, Cpl Mauro returned to Camp Johnson to attend the Enlisted Supply Intermediate Course (ESIC) where he was the honor graduate.  In April 2006, the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Educational Program Board selected Sgt Mauro. 

     Upon selection, Sgt Mauro reported to NROTC University of South Florida earning a bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in economics.  His performance while serving at the NROTC earned him the Honor Graduate title for the Spring 2008 class and Magna Cum Laude honors distinction.  2ndLt Mauro accepted his commission on 22 May 2008 and reported to The Basic School where he received the military occupation of 3404 Financial Management Officer and graduated 26th out of 235.

     In 2008, 2ndLt Mauro reported to Financial Management School (FMS) where he graduated 2nd in class with an honors distinction.  After completion of MOS school, 2ndLt Mauro reported to Marine Special Operation Command (MARSOC) aboard Stone Bay, NC to serve as the Budget Officer.  During his tour, 1stLt Mauro enrolled in the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) distance education program, graduating with distinction in May 2012.  The Commandant’s Career-Level Education Board subsequently selected him to attend EWS resident course aboard Quantico, Virginia.  In addition to EWS, Capt Mauro attended the Advance Financial Management Course during the Occupational Field Expansion Course during the spring of 2013.

     In 2013, after graduation from EWS, Capt Mauro reported to 2D Marine Division aboard Camp Lejeune, NC to serve as the AC/S Deputy Comptroller.  During this tour, Capt Mauro deployed as an Individual Augment to Special Operation Command Central Task Force as the J8 OIC from Aug 2014 to Feb 2015.  As the J8 OIC, Capt Mauro managed $1.8M in cash operations in support of seven compartmentalized mission sets conducted in five countries within the CENTCOM AOR.

     Upon return from IA assignment, Capt Mauro reported to FMS as the Officer Instructor.  There he served as the officer responsible for the curriculum development and training provided to Marines and civilians performing work in the Financial Management (FM) field.  In April 2016, Maj Mauro assumed the role of Executive Officer, FMS, responsible for oversight and communicating the commander’s intent to the various sections in support of FMS’s overall mission to train FM personnel.

     In 2018, the Commandants Professional Intermediate-Level Education Board selected Maj Mauro to attend the Command and Staff College resident course AY-19 where he graduated with a master’s in military studies.  Upon graduation, Maj Mauro reported to 2D Marine Aviation Wing where he served as the AC/S Deputy Comptroller.

     In 2021, LtCol Mauro reported to MARSOC as the AC/S Comptroller and is now the Commanding Officer of Financial Management School, Marine Corps Combat Services Support Schools.

     LtCol Mauro’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 gold star in lieu of 2nd award., and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 1 gold star in lieu of 2nd award.
