Gunnery Sergeant Henley,enlisted in the United Stated Marine Corps delayed entry program and reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, California for recruit training in August 2002. Upon graduating recruit training in November 2002, GySgt Henley was transferred to Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry-West (SOI-W), Camp Pendleton, California. Following his completion of training at SOI-W in January 2003, GySgt Henley was assigned to his first unit 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division Camp Pendleton, California where he served as Rifleman.
In January 2003, GySgt Henley was promoted to the rank of Private First Class and immediately deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed, GySgt Henley was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and earned the billet of team leader in September 2003.
From September 2004 to April 2005, GySgt Henley deployed a second time to Fallujah, Iraq in support of Operation Phantom Fury, where he was promoted the rank of Corporal in October 2004, and was selected to the billet of squad leader.
In November 2005, GySgt Henley received orders to Edson Range, Camp Pendleton, California where he served as Range coach. After producing respectable range qualification statistics, he was promoted in billet to Block NCO in June 2006.
In the ensuing months from June 2006 to March 2007, GySgt Henley continued to produce respectable range statics and was internally promoted to the billet of Primary Marksmanship Instructor.
In March 2007, GySgt Henley was then assigned to the Marksmanship Formal Schools Instructor, serving as chief instructor until his departure from Edson Range in May 2008.
In May 2008, GySgt Henley rejoined 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, for a second tour of duty assigned as squad leader deploying on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Okinawa, Japan from January 2009 to August 2009.
In September 2009, GySgt Henley was again internally promoted in billet to Platoon Sergeant and subsequently promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in January of 2010. In September of 2010, GySgt Henley was deployed to Sagin, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom until April 2011.
In April 2012, GySgt Henley received orders to the School of Infantry-East, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to serve in the billet of Combat Instructor. During GySgt Henley’s tour at SOI-E, he served as Platoon Sergeant Company C, Primary Tactics Instructor Company C, and Company Gunnery Sergeant Company D until his departure in July 2015.
In August 2015, GySgt Henley received orders to 2d Battalion, 2d Marines, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
In October 2015, GySgt Henley was promoted to his current rank of Gunnery Sergeant. While serving in 2d Battalion, 2d Marines, GySgt Henley served as Battalion Assistant Operations Chief and Company Gunnery Sergeant Easy Company deploying on the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan from January 2016 to August 2016.
In April 2017, GySgt Henley received orders for a second tour of duty at SOI-E as a Combat Instructor.
In May 2017, GySgt was assigned to Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, Infantry Unit Leader Training Company, where he worked as part of the Infantry Small Unit Leader Course as instructor and Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge until February 2018.
In February 2018, GySgt Henley was transferred from Infantry Unit Leader Training Company to Advance Infantry Training Company (AITC) and internally assigned to the billet of AITC 1stSgt where he currently serves.
GySgt Henley’s personal decorations include Purple Heart (2nd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd Award, w/”V” device), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Combat Instructor Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), and Combat Action Ribbon (2nd Award).
