U.S. Marines attending the Assault Amphibian Vehicle Repairer Intermediate Course (AAVRI) take a HS-525 transmission from a horizontal stand on to a vertical stand to begin the shimming process at the Assault Amphibian School, Del Mar Beach, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Oct. 10, 2018. Shimming ensures that the forward and reverse speed shaft of the HS-525 transmission has the proper clearance between gears or mechanisms that safeguards the proper meshing between machined surfaces to avoid damage and additionally allows lubricants to pass through the transmission preventing the overheating and warping of components within the transmission.
