Col William T. Wilburn Jr.
Colonel Wilburn is the Commanding Officer of Marine Corps Intelligence Schools. Prior to his current assignment, he served as the Director, Combined Joint Intelligence Operations Center-Kabul, Afghanistan.
A native of Georgia, Colonel Wilburn received a commission after graduating from Kennesaw State University, in March 1996. Colonel Wilburn operated at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels. He also commanded at the platoon, company, and battalion levels. Specifically, Colonel Wilburn commanded CI/HUMINT Company, 3d Intelligence Battalion; Company I, Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion; 1st Intelligence Battalion, I MEF Headquarters Group; and I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) Headquarters Group Forward, I MEF.
Colonel Wilburn participated in contingencies and named operations in USEUCOM, USAFRICOM, USPACOM, and USCENTCOM areas of responsibility including: JOINT FORGE, the NATO-led stabilization efforts in Kosovo; BALKAN CALM, the Kosovo Diplomatic Observer Mission; AUTUMN SHELTER, the American embassy evacuation in Kinshasa, Congo; UNIFIED ASSISTANCE, the response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami; ENDURING FREEDOM, U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan; and FREEDOM'S SENTINEL/Resolute Support Mission, the NATO-led train/advise/assist mission in Afghanistan.
Colonel Wilburn served in several staff assignments including: Occupational Field Sponsor, Intelligence Department, HQMC; Operations Officer, 3d Intelligence Battalion; Executive Officer, 3d Intelligence Battalion; Branch Chief, National Security Agency/Central Security Service Hawaii; Chief of War Plans, I MEF; Branch Chief, Defense Intelligence Agency; Executive Officer to the Director, Defense Intelligence Agency; Executive Officer to the Deputy Commander, USCYBERCOM; Senior Legislative Liaison, Office of the Director of National Intelligence; Director, Combined Joint Intelligence Operations Center-Afghanistan; and Senior Advisor to the Director, Intelligence, HQMC.
Between these assignments, Colonel Wilburn earned advanced degrees in Economics (w/distinction), Strategic Intelligence (w/distinction), Human Relations (w/distinction), National Security Strategy (w/distinction), and Operational Studies. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Air Ground Task Force Intelligence Officer's Course (w/distinction) in Dam Neck, VA; the Post Graduate Intelligence Program (w/distinction) in Washington D.C.; the Weapons and Tactics Instructor's Course at Yuma, AZ; the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS; the School of Advanced Warfighting at Quantico, VA; and the National War College at Fort McNair. Additionally, Colonel Wilburn studied National Security policy while a Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Colonel Wilburn's personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.
