Commanding Officer
Colonel J. L. Medeiros, Jr.

Colonel John L. Medeiros, Jr. was commissioned in 1996 through the Platoon Leaders Course.  Reporting for duty with 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in 1997, Colonel Medeiros served as the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer, Platoon Commander, and Company Executive Officer.


In November 1999, Colonel Medeiros reported to Combat Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division serving as the Assistant Operations Officer, Composite Company Commander (Camp Fuji, Det), and Headquarters and Services Company Commander.  From 2000 to 2001, Colonel Medeiros served as the Operations Officer for Special Purpose - Marine Air Ground Task Force, Landing Force Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (LF CARAT). In 2002, he reported to the Expeditionary Warfare School, Quantico, Virginia.  Upon graduation in 2003, he reported to Officer Candidates School as a Platoon Commander.


In 2004, Colonel Medeiros reported to 2d AA BN to serve as a Company Commander and the Battalion Operations Officer during which he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  In 2006, he reported to the Advance Amphibious Assault Vehicle program office to serve as the Project Manager, Guns and Ammunition. In 2010, Colonel Medeiros returned to 2d Marine Division, deploying in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as a Future Operations Officer (CJ35) and Border Mentor-Adviser with Combined Joint Task Force-101st, Regional Command East, Afghanistan. Upon return he assumed duties as the Battalion Executive Officer for 2d AA BN.


In 2011, Colonel Medeiros deployed to Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa, Djibouti, to serve as a J5 country planner and the Contingency Operations Officer.  In 2012, Colonel Medeiros assumed duties as Inspector General (AC/S G7), 2d Marine Division.  In 2013, Colonel Medeiros assumed command of 2d AA BN until 2015. Following TLS, he served on the Joint Staff J7 as an Observer/Trainer for the Deployable Training Division.


Colonel Medeiros is a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Naval War College.  He has an M.A. in Military Studies and an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies. 


His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star and ‘V’ device, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
