SgtMaj Gary J. Bass Senior Enlisted Advisor MATSG-22

SgtMaj Gary J. Bass was born in Medford, Oregon, and raised in Central Point, Oregon.

 
He enlisted in July 1986, and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot San Diego, California.
 
After graduation from recruit training, he attended Armor School at Ft Knox, Ky where he was trained as a Tank Crewman. His first duty station was 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Ca.
 
In September of 1990, he deployed to Saudi Arabia with Team Bravo, 1st Tank Battalion for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm where he served as a gunner and Tank Commander. During the Gulf War he deployed forward with Task Force Papa Bear.
 
Following the Gulf War, during the downsizing period, Sergeant Bass was honorably discharged on 16 July, 1992.
 
In March of 1995, LCpl Bass reenlisted and was sent to Aviation Electricians Course at Millington, TN, where he was trained as an Aviation Electrician for the AV-8B Harrier II aircraft. Upon graduation from Avionics school Corporal Bass reported to VMA-211 at MCAS Yuma, Arizona.  In 1998 he deployed with the 11th MEU (SOC) where he participated Operations Southern Watch and Safe Departure. 
 
In March of 2000, Staff Sergeant Bass was ordered to Recruiting Duty and assigned to Recruiting Station Seattle, Wa.  He served as both a canvassing recruiter and Recruiting Sub Station(RSS) SNCOIC until the end of his tour in 2004. During his time as an RSS SNCOIC he was recognized as “SNCOIC of the year” as well as “Station of the Year”
 
GySgt Bass returned to MCAS Yuma and served with VMA-211 as the Avionics SNCOIC and Squadron GySgt for a deployment to Al Asad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom IV.
 
In May of 2006 SgtMaj Bass reported for duty at 3D Bn, 4th Marines where he served as the Company First Sergeant for Weapons Company and Headquarters and Service Company for two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
 
In January of 2009, SgtMaj Bass reported to 3D Assault Amphibian Battalion to serve as Company First Sergeant, Headquarters and Service Company.
 
In May of 2010, Sergeant Major Bass reported in to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-465 to serve as Squadron Sergeant Major.
 
In December of 2011, Sergeant Major Bass received orders to Okinawa, Japan and reported in to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron One to serve as Squadron Sergeant Major.
 
In December of 2012, Sergeant Major Bass reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 36 as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
 
In July of 2014, Sergeant Major Bass reported to his present assignment as the group Sergeant Major for Marine Aviation Training Support Group 22 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
 
Sergeant Major Bass’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars and the Combat Action Ribbon.
