Lieutenant Colonel Mayer was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Fairfield, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1995. During his initial tour, he served as a Dynamic Components Mechanic with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-29 (MALS-29), MCAS New River. From 1996 to 1999, he served in various billets and collateral duties and selected to the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP).
From August 1999 to August 2002, Staff Sergeant Mayer attended the Unversity of Pittsburgh ultimately earning a commission as a Second Lieutenant. Upon graduating as a distinguished graduate from The Basic School in 2003, Second Lieutenant Mayer was selected to serve as a Ground Intelligence Officer. Following completion of follow-on MOS schools, he reported to 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, where he served as Assistant Intelligence Officer, Scout Sniper Platoon Commander, and Battalion Intelligence Officer. During this tour, he participated in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, and deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC), 15th MEU (SOC) and promoted to Captain.
From September 2007 to May 2010, Captain Mayer served as an Intelligence Watch Officer and India military forces analyst at the Joint Intelligence Operations Center, U.S. Pacific Command.
During the summer of 2010, Captain Mayer reported to the MAGTF Intelligence Officers Course (MIOC) in Dam Neck, Virginia. Upon completion, he was ordered to 1st Radio Battalion where he served as the Alpha Company Commander. After two years in command, Captain Mayer volunteered to serve as the Special Technical Operations (STO) Chief for I MEF (Fwd) in Helmand Province, Afghanistan during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Upon his return, Captain Mayer served as the 1st Radio Battalion Executive Officer for four months.
In July 2013, Captain Mayer reported for duty as a student at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. During this time, he was promoted to Major and completed a Masters of Military Science degree.
From July 2014 to June 2017, Major Mayer served in the Intelligence Directorate at the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served in a variety of billets ultimately serving as the J-2 Chief of Intelligence Operations. During this tour, he participated in Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and Operation UPRISE GIANT.
From July 2017 to December 2019, Major Mayer served as the Intelligence Officer with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. During this time, Major Mayer participated in Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA) operations in Puerto Rico, and deployed to Moron, Spain as part of the Special Purpose MAGTF Crisis Response–Africa (SPMAGTF-CR-AF). In August 2019, he was promoted to his current grade and reassigned as the Deputy Operations Officer, II MEF G-2 in December 2019.
On 12 June 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Mayer assumed command of the Marine Corps Detachment, Presidio of Monterey (MCD PoM) in Monterey, California supporting the Defense Language Institute, Naval Postgraduate School, and Naval Air Station Lemoore.
